Nissan has expanded the GU Patrol four-wheel-drive (4WD) lineup with the launch of the cab chassis models available with a choice of powerful turbocharged or naturally-aspirated 4.2-litre diesel engines and coil or leaf- spring suspensions. This is the debut of Nissan's 4.2-litre in-line six cylinder turbocharged diesel engine.
GU Patrol Cab Chassis is now the class leader in crucial areas such as performance, interior space and driving comfort.
Australia accounts for 80 per cent of worldwide Patrol Cab Chassis sales — as a result, the new models have been specified primarily for our market and represent three years of development plus around 100,000 kms of local testing.
All Cab Chassis models feature the stylish good looks of GU model Patrols launched just over twelve months ago; interior specifications and trim match similar Patrol wagon models (DX and ST).
Target customers, including primary producers, the mining industry government and private tradespeople will be impressed by the class-leading large cabin area with impressively low interior noise, the substantial payload capacity (GVM + 250kg),strong engine performance (114kW and 330Nm for turbo-diesel modeis) and large fuel tank capacity (95 litre main tank and 80 litre sub tank).
GU Patrol Cab Chassis models are available in two specification levels — base model DX or luxurious ST — both available with either a turbocharged or naturally- aspirated 4.2-litre diesel engine. ST models fitted with the turbo-diesel engine are only available with all-round coil suspension but other models can be ordered with either coil or leaf-sprung suspension.
An innovation with the new CU Patrol Cab Chassis lineup is that leaf spring versions actually come with coil front springs to provide outstanding ride comfort, reduced NVH and a small 12.5 metre turning circle.
The 4.2-litre six cylinder turbocharged diesel powerplant gives the Patrol Cab Chassis a distinct performance advantage over key rivals. With 114kW at 3600 rpm and 330Nm at 2000 rpm, the new engine has been developed in response to Australian demands both for towing and other commercial applications.
And the naturally-aspirated diesel engine is more than competitive — 91kW at 4000 rpm and 272Nm at 2000rpm.
Chassis development centered on delivering improved driving performance and comfort levels over the superseded GQ models. This was in direct response to customer feedback — Patrol Cab Chassis owners frequently spend extensive hours behind the wheel of their vehicles.
CU model suspensions have been re-tuned specifically for the Cab Chassis and the leaf spring rear suspension has also been re-tuned for the new model. Body and cabin mounts have been made more rigid and increased sound deadening material has been installed.
Inside it's a similar story — increased interior space was the most-requested item from Cab Chassis owners. Compared to current LandCruiser and the superseded GQ model, the new GU Patrol Cab Chassis has more head room, shoulder room and leg room.
In finalising the critical interior dimensions, Nissan used the AM95 dummy — the largest standard applied in North America.
Comfort was also an important customer issue and CU Patrol Cab Chassis models virtually match their wagon brothers for interior quietness and ride comfort. Features such as double door seals (reduced wind noise),wide opening doors and, on ST models, carpet, CD player, a large centre console, electric windows and map lights make long hours behind the wheel considerably more pleasant.
Coil sprung ST models also gain four-wheel disc brakes with dual piston front calipers.
The standard transmission is Nissan's five-speed manual and a limited slip differential is also standard on all models.
Nissan is targeting monthly sales of 300 GU Patrol Cab Chassis models. This represents a market share of 40 per cent.
Announcing the additions to the Patrol lineup, Nissan Australia's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Leon Daphne, said the Cab Chassis models have all the inherent strengths of their wagon brothers.
'Cab Chassis Patrol owners place the most extreme demands on their vehides — frequently operating with heavy loads in the harshest off-road conditions — and in these circumstances, the acknowledged strengths of Patrol with its solid chassis, proven off-road performance and comfortable highway cruising are well appreciated,' Mr Daphne said.
"With Australia accounting for over 80 per cent of worldwide Patrol Cab Chassis sales, we are indebted to Nissan Japan for the extensive local development undertaken prior to finalising the specifications of the new model' he added.
A Mantis 4 inch lift by Kaos provides plenty of extra off-road ability, along with room for 35 inch tyres.
